FRESH WATER COUNTY – The Sweetwater County Search and Rescue Team is desperate for new members to join its team.

“We are looking for volunteers. Our list is getting pretty small, ”Search and Rescue Commander Russ Hemmert said.

According to Hemmert, the search and rescue team has had some very good volunteers over the years, but many of them leave as they get older. Currently, Search and Rescue has approximately 18 members. Hemmert said he would like to recruit at least 30 to 40 more members.

The team is looking for residents who can volunteer 20 to 24 hours per year. This averages out to about two hours per month. No experience is necessary to join this group.

“We provide access to all the necessary training,” he said. “It’s not a real high pressure situation.”

During the first year, volunteers will take approximately five training courses. These lessons usually last about an hour. Once training, such as CPR and first aid courses, are completed, volunteers can decide which area of search and rescue is of interest to them. Hemmert said some of the search and rescue teams include rope, dog corpse, whitewater rescue and ice rescue.

“We’re always looking for new ideas and a different perspective,” Hemmert said.

There is an application that interested residents must complete. Claims can be picked up and delivered any time during business hours to the Sweetwater County Sheriff‘s Department located at the Sweetwater County Justice Center at 50140 HWY 191 S, Building B.

Search and Rescue meets every second Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m. at the Justice Center. The next meeting is December 13 at 7:30 p.m.
