Watch Vote 4 for Best Pets ‘Rescue’ winner on Local 4

This Sunday at 6:30 a.m. our Kim DeGiulio takes you to meet Elk, an adoptive pup with big jesters who is looking for his forever home. He is a large 3 year old mixed breed who loves everyone but is not a fan of other dogs.

You’ll also meet Elk’s adoptive father and a wonderful Canine Companions Rescue Center volunteer, Megan Meyer, who has volunteered with the nonprofit since adopting her first dog in 2019.

“I now have two dogs adopted by the CCRC, and one is an adoptive failure,” Megan joked. “Thank you to everyone who voted and spread the word about voting to engage others. It’s such an honor to win the Best Rescue in Metro Detroit award because the majority of our dogs come from Metro Detroit shelters.

Reducing the number of dogs in Michigan shelters is the goal of CCRC – founded in 2004 by Connie and Carl Fleck, and Wendy Kopera. Today, the rescue is led by Operations Manager Erica McCarthy.

Their organization largely depends on volunteers like Megan. They cater for all races, sizes, ages and of course those who need a little TLC too.

What’s worth it?

“The best part is seeing every dog find their forever home, no matter how long it takes or what obstacles we have to overcome to get there,” Megan says. “The happiness and excitement between an adopter and a dog who has been waiting for that special day is worth it.”

This does not mean that there are no difficulties encountered in this voluntary work. She says the hardest part is not being able to save all the dogs.

How you can help

CPAB always needs more foster homes, with the greatest need being homes that can accommodate a large breed dog. The majority of dogs in shelters weigh over 40 pounds.

Where to start

CCRC provides everything needed to successfully foster these adorable dogs. You can get started by filling out a volunteer application on their website
